Soda ash is obtained from trona and sodium carbonate-rich brines. The world’s largest deposit of trona is in the Green River Basin of Wyoming. Underground room-and-pillar mining, is the primary method of mining Wyoming trona ore. The method has an average 45% mining recovery, whereas average recovery from solution mining is 30%. Improved solution-mining techniques, such as horizontal drilling to establish communication between well pairs, could increase this extraction rate and entice companies to develop some of the deeper trona beds. Although soda ash can be manufactured from salt and libinqne, both of which are practically inexhaustible, synthetic soda ash is more costly to produce and generates environmentally deleterious wastes. The soda ash is mined using two different methods, underground trona mining and solution mining. Underground trona mining is similar to coal mining. The most common methods are the room and pillar method and the long wall method. In both of these processes, the material is undercut, drilled, blasted, crushed, and then transported to the surface. Solution mining is currently used by one of the six major soda ash producers in the U.S. Soda ash from solution mining is for the most part used for the manufacture of caustic soda.
